$1 MILLION CHALLENGE | ADOPT-A-ROAD | CHRISTMAS IN APRIL | VOLUNTEER IMPACT | LIGHTHOUSE

$1 Million Challenge

Food Donations and a $1 Million Challenge
Alan Shawn Feinstein, a philanthropist, has pledged $1 million to be divided among nonprofit groups in the US that work to feed the hungry. Based on additional food donations taken in for Lighthouse of Oakland County from March 1 through April 30, The World Hunger Fund will receive a proportional amount of the $1 million for our local feed-the-hungry effort.

THANKS to all who helped us collect over $194 worth of food & $112.00 cash for the month of march, the April totals will be coming soon.

We can make a difference in your community!

Adopt-a-Road Program

Community of Christ of Waterford has adopted Scott Lake Road between Dixie Hwy and Elizabeth Lake Road. The Road Commission for Oakland County supplies us with orange safety vests, garbage bags and two signs with our name on it at Dixie Hwy and Elizabeth Lake Road. It is required that we clean up the road a minimum of three times a year. The Road Commission designates one week in the spring, summer, and fall where they will pick up the trash bags off of the side of the road. If we choose to clean the road up at a different time other then when they designate then we would be responsible to discard the trash.

Watch the announcements page in the bulletin for 2004 Road Clean-Up Dates.

Thanks to all who helped with Adopt-a-Road!

We will meet at the church at 12:00 p.m. after the Sunday service and carpool to Scott Lake Road. If you are interested in helping, please bring work gloves and wear grubby clothes. It can get messy!

Lighthouse of Oakland County, Inc

Twenty-eight years ago, Lighthouse began as an ecumenical ministry to help low-income families and seniors in need. Today, it stands as an independent agency providing a continuum of a full range of human services that move people from poverty and crisis to independence and self-sufficiency. Lighthouse helps people find permanent solutions to the problems faced by our neighbors in need.

Lighthouse of Oakland County and its subsidiaries, Lighthouse Emergency Services, Lighthouse PATH, and Lighthouse Community Development, help many children, families and seniors because of the selfless donation of time and other contributions by hundreds of individuals and organizations.

Community of Christ of Waterford contributes non-perishable items every month to the Lighthouse of Oakland County, Inc. We have a moment set aside every Sunday morning where the congregation will bring their donations to the rostrum and place in a basket. These items are then delivered every month to Lighthouse. It is announced the first Sunday of the month what Lighthouse is in need of the most. Peanut butter is the most asked item. They are always low on peanut butter.

Christmas in April

The Oakland County chapter began in 1992. In 1997, Waterford Township joined in the fun! On the last Saturday of every April volunteers transform the hearts and homes of our area low-income seniors. An army of volunteers (just like you) equipped with donated materials (from area businesses just like yours) spend the day roofing, painting, installing furnaces, updating electrical and plumbing all at no cost to the senior. If you, your civic group, your group or business would like to get involved, please call (248) 889-5450.

Jaime & Donna with Mr Bulter: the Christmas in April renovation recipient.

Yes, YOU can make a difference in YOUR community.

Christmas in April is dedicated to keeping low-income, elderly and disabled homeowners living in warmth, safety, independence, dignity and decency through home repair and rehabilitation volunteer services. Each year over 300 cities and towns across the country join with thousands of volunteers who pitch in to build porches, install new roofs and furnaces, paint houses, and complete endless plumbing and electrical repairs. People from all walks of life come together to work toward this common goal.

"Every time a hand reaches out to help another…that is Christmas.

Every time someone puts anger aside and strives for understanding… that is Christmas.

Every time people forget their differences and realize their love for each other that is Christmas"
